FEBRUARY 21, 2011 ----- THE MAGIC MILE SPEED REPORT; DAYTONA 500 RECAP ..... The green flag finally dropped on the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunday at the Daytona 500 and what a race it was. The Great American Race saw a record number of lead changes and caution flags but ended with a 20 year old rookie in victory lane! Below are a few facts from yesterday's Daytona 500.
*Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Wood Brothers Ford became the youngest winner of the Daytona 500.
*At 20 years old Bayne is the second youngest winner in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (Joey Logano is the youngest driver, at 19 years old he won the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2009).
*He is only the second driver to win the Daytona 500 in his first start. Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500.
*It was the 10-year anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's death.
*Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the pole but had to start from 43rd because of a practice crash. He finished 24th.
*There were 74 lead changes amongst 22 leaders.
*There were a total of 16 caution flags for 60 laps, including two attempts at a green- white-checkered.
*Kevin Harvick's day ended early with a blown engine.
*The lap 29 crash involved a total of 17 cars, including three of the four Hendrick Motorsports cars.
*This was the fifth Daytona 500 to end in a green-white-checkered finish.
*Top-10 finishers; Trevor Bayne, Carl Edwards, David Gilliland, Bobby Labonte, Kurt Busch, Juan Pablo Montoya, Regan Smith, Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Mark Martin.
*Top-10 in points; Carl Edwards, David Gilliland, Bobby Labonte, Kurt Busch, Juan Pablo Montoya, Regan Smith, Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Mark Martin and A.J. Allmendinger.
*The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race will take place at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, Feb. 27 beginning at 3 p.m.
