MAY 11, 2011 ----- 111-LAP LATE MODEL RACE OPENS 2011 UNITY RACEWAY SEASON SUNDAY, MAY 15 ----- Opening day at Unity Raceway is set for this Sunday afternoon, May 15 with a full card of racing topped by a 111-lap Late Model feature race.
Promoters George and Sherry Fernald enter their fourth season operating the track dubbed “ Maine ’s Toughest Racing Oval” with confidence that both car counts and fan attendance will once again be on the rise.
Competitor registration in the top-tier Late Model division is well above what has been seen at the Route 139 oval since weekly Pro Stock racing was discontinued some five years ago. In addition, several invaders from other Maine racetracks have expressed interest in competing at this Sunday’s opener, which offers the winner $1,111.
Late Model division rules at Unity Raceway allow almost any driver or car owner racing in the division throughout New England to compete. The second-tier Super Street class is growing, and car counts in all classes are expected to rise above recent levels, due to various other Maine Speedways either dropping the class or not opening for the 2011 season.
Longtime competitor and, more recently, Chief Technical Inspector Ed Bellows has been appointed Racing Director, replacing Ron Roy, who has elected to scale back his duties due to health concerns. Bellows will also take on chief starter duties. Filling Bellows former spot will be Dan Sampson and Jud Derbyshire, both successful competitors in past seasons at the third-mile oval.
On the fan side, concession offerings have been improved, expanded, and Pepsi has come on board as a track sponsor.
After two 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon racing programs scheduled for May 15 and 22 the track switches to its’ regular, weekly Saturday night racing schedule, with the first race scheduled for 6:00 p.m. each week.
