MAY 13, 2011 ----- JOSH WOOD ENJOYING STELLAR BEGINNING TO SECOND SEASON IN DARE STOCK COMPETITION AT STAFFORD ----- For DARE Stock driver Josh Wood, the 2011 season at Stafford has been nothing short of great. In his first two races, he has finished third and second and he currently sits tied with his father Don in the DARE Stock points standings. Last season was Wood’s rookie season in DARE Stock competition and he posted two wins and finished 9th in the points standings. But his rookie season was full of ups and downs, which Wood says helped him become a better driver for the 2011 season.
“Yeah, it’s been a great start to the year,” said Wood. “Last year was a great learning experience for myself. I crashed the car a lot and I learned how to save the car instead of spinning and crashing. Having my dad is a huge help, he’s been racing since the ‘80s and he knows everything you need to know about how the car handles. He taught me what to do to the car if it’s tight or if it’s loose and that’s been a big help for me telling him what the car needs.”
Wood comes from a background in go karts where he has won over 80 races and 6 championships while racing at Pinnacle Raceway, Whip City, and Westfield. Wood credits his go kart experience along with a new car and good crew help for his stellar beginning to the 2011 season.
“We have a new BFR car and with my dad’s help and help from Barry Fluckiger, that’s why we’ve been running so well so far this year,” said Wood.
For the past several seasons, the trend in the DARE Stocks has been that the cars that are up front in the points standings usually are the cars that are contending for championships at seasons’ end. Norm Sears won the first two races of the 2008 season and went on to win the championship; Don Wood took the points lead after the second race of the 2009 season and went on to win the championship; and last season saw Tony Membrino, Jr. win the first race of the season and he stayed up front in the points race all season long.
With Wood’s strong start to the 2011 season, he is looking to continue that trend and be among the championship contenders at the end of the year.
“I want to be a contender in the points this year, that’s the main goal,” said Wood. “The second goal is to have fun racing because if you’re not having fun, then why race? Winning and running up front definitely helps us have fun. My confidence is growing and I’d like to win the championship, but a top-3 finish in the championship would be a good finish for us.”
Wood carries sponsorship from R.A.D. Automachine, Kar Kare Collision, Falls Alignment, Berardi Transmissions, Custom Wood Floors, and BFR Chassis. With a third and second place finish in each of the first two races this season, Wood is confident that it won’t be long before he is back in victory lane this year, especially if he keeps trending up towards the number 1 finishing position.
“I think we’re real close to winning,” said Wood.
