JULY 4, 2011 ----- Two-time defending champion Grant Aither took the Prime Storage Late Model Sportsmen at Lee USA Speedway ----- Two-time defending champion Grant Aither took the Prime Storage Late Model Sportsmen by storm at Lee USA Speedway on Friday night, picking up his second win of the season in the E Keys 4 Cars sponsored 100-lap main event.
A two-lap time trial session saw Aither snag the pole over Bobby Melvin and Geoff Rollins, but a pre-race redraw put the trio of drivers back in the fourth and fifth rows when flagman Bryon Callen dropped the green.
Michele Fushpanski broke out to the lead on the start, but it only took Rollins ten laps to catch her and move past to take over. Jimmy Renfrew slipped past Fushpanski for second on lap 19, with Aither right on his back bumper in third.
Aither disposed of Renfrew with 30 laps on the scoreboard, setting his sights on leader Rollins, who was nothing short of impressive in his first start of the year. The race ran caution-free to the halfway mark, when Aither made his move to the lead.
Rollins, Renfrew, Melvin, and Ryan Green were the rest of the top five at the crossed flags, but the yellow flew on lap 52, sending everyone to the pits for their mandatory pit stops. Aither was first off pit road, and everyone was looking at his back bumper the rest of the way.
Bobby Melvin closed in on Aither in the late laps, but he couldn't find a way past and Aither went on to score the victory. Melvin, Green, J.R. Baril, Renfrew, Fushpanski, Rollins, Timmy Johnson, Josh Ball, Patrick Stewart, Ryan Gath, Mike Mitchell, Tony Kawejsza, Todd Bregy, and Kayla Cazares were the top fifteen.
Former champion Mike Ordway, Jr. was the early leader in the Benson Lumber and hardware Small Block Super main event, setting the pace until a lap ten caution bunched up the 18-car field for a restart.
Matt Seavey lined up alongside Ordway, and got a great jump in the high line to jet past for the lead when racing resumed. The race was halted by a red flag just past halfway for a spectacular incident involving Johnny Burke, George Perreault, Jr., and Butch Valley, Jr.
Seavey picked up the lead once again after the cleanup, and despite Ordway dogging him all the way to the checkers, he held on to collect his first win of the 2001 season. Ordway came up just short in the runner-up slot, with Ben Tinker, John Leonard, Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Tommy Tombarello, Jr., Burke, Jim Barker, Perreault, and Valley the rest of the top ten.
Veteran Bobby Glass held off a tough late-race challenge from Steve Douphinette to grab his first feature win of the year in the David's Race Cars and Components Hobby Stocks, becoming the sixth different winner in seven races this season.
Mike Williams came from mid-pack to score another podium in the third spot aboard the Mike White entry, with the division's only two-time winner, Mark Parenteau fourth and Jim Piaseczny rounding out the top five.
Rookie Danielle Simoneau jumped out to the early lead in the Picnic Table Factory Ironman feature event, but she quickly lost the top spot to the hard-charging Jake Rheaume, still searching for that elusive first career win.
Rheaume set the pace for the next several laps, but Kyle Roy moved to the outside and made the pass on the eighth circuit. From that point on, it was all Roy, and he easily cruised to the checkers to become the first repeat Ironman winner of 2011.
Rheaume scored a solid runner-up for his efforts, with Kale Billings, Troy Washburn, Dave Brown, Simoneau, Evan Horvath, Mike Olson, Shane Horvath, and Justin Dawalga the remainder of the top ten.
Lee USA Speedway's headline attraction for next Friday night, July 8, will be the return of the Modified Racing Series to contest the Port City 100 presented by Laticrete, along with the Small Block Supers, Hobby Stocks, and Ironmen.
