JULY 25, 2011 ----- Boniface & Patnode top Mods, Raymond wins career first at Monadnock ----- Modified aces Jim Boniface and Todd Patnode each added to his vast list of feature wins Saturday at Monadnock Speedway, Ken Springer and Nick Boivin each took another victory lap too, but the biggest win of the night was scored by Mini Stock rookie Julia Raymond.

Trophyless in her first eight outings, Raymond, the granddaughter of oval track legend Roger Raymond, gobbled up a strong field in the 25-lap event to score her career-first NASCAR feature win. Other winners on the July 23 card included Young Guns Joe Collins and Hillary Renaud, Allison Legacy series star James Logan, Ed Lofland, victorious in the Thunder Stock main, Matt Gauffin, who earned the top Lightning Stock spot in a 50-lap barnburner, and Barry Gray, winner of the 20-lap Super Late Model shootout.

Raymond, last season’s four-cylinder Enduro champion at the high-banked speedplant, served notice that good things were soon to come by blasting to victory in her heat race. Then, starting in row two in the 25-lap Mini Stock main, she took the point on lap three and never looked back, running a perfect line to keep the wolves at bay en route to her first win.

Rich Fournier would come from row five to give Raymond his best shot – hitting the stripe with her in a dead heat on laps 18, 19, and 20 - before being shuffled backwards on his final trip around the high banked quarter-mile. Eric Dejackome, strong all night, got up for second, with Rob Thompson coming home third, after winning his qualifying race.

With the Mod Squad contesting twin 25-lap events, it was Jim Boniface coming from row five to take control of the first go-round on lap 16, and then outgunning Kirk Alexander to score his third win of the season.

Rob Williams never led a lap, but kept his nose in the thick of things all race long to score a season-best third. Nick Boivin and Bob Drown rounded out the top five, with Boivin using his strong outing as a tune-up for his Sportsman Modified victory later that night.

Todd Patnode, who’d failed to answer the bell in round one after suffering through an assortment of mechanical woes earlier in the day, was on a rail in the nightcap, blistering the track to deny Boniface a sweep of the twin bill.

A spin by Butch Perry scattered the field before lap one was in the books, Boniface took immediate control of the event, but soon had a mirror filled with Patnode, who charged from row six to lasso Boniface before grabbing the point on lap six.

Alexander, one of the victims of the turn four wall on lap one, pulled into third on lap nine but, on fading tires, would have to settle for third behind Patnode and Boniface. Williams added a fourth-place finish to his earlier third, with Matt Mead finishing his strong run in fifth.

Nick Boivin had the hot hand in the Sportsman Modified feature, charging from row five, to breath down Kyle Poodiack’s back for ten hasty trips around the high banks, until Poodiack bobbled on lap 18, with Boivin snatching the point and then driving away.

Bill Kimball, mired in heavy rush hour traffic for much of the race, got up for second, two car lengths behind Boivin, with Brandon Warren powering to a season-high third. Rich Hammann and Tyler Jarvenpaa rounded out the top five.

The Super Stock main belonged to Nancy Muni-Ruot for 24 and one-half laps, but a multi-car jingle in the last turn saw the Harwinton, Conn. pilot’s strong run end with a bone-crunching crash into the front-stretch wall, with Brian Chapin slamming the concrete too, as Ken Springer claimed his second win of the season. Josh King had his strongest run of the summer to claim second, with Kevin Russell third. Jason Lafleur and John Lavoie, hip-deep in traffic for most of the race, rounded out the top five.

Joe Collins led early and often to win his first Young Guns feature, coming home ahead of Chris Lawrence and John Vorhees. In the second go-round, Hillary Renaud blew by a fading JT Cloutier who suffered mechanical issues on lap six and then sped off to victory ahead of Ian MacDonald and Scott Betourney.

Barry Gray kept his winning streak intact in the Super Late Models, powering past Mike Parks on lap ten and then checking out on the field. Parks was strong in second, with Steve Gauthier a solid third.

Like Gray, Allison Legacy pilot James Logan made easy work of picking up the win. Wiring the event, Logan has a full straightaway lead when the caution waved on lap 24 to give the field one last shot at him. Undaunted, Logan again turned on the afterburners to earn the win ahead of Peter Portante and Nathan Johnson.

The Lightning Stock main kept the fans on the edges of their seats for all 50 laps, as Matt Gauffin, Gordon Farnum, and Jonah Delgenio – each bidding for his second win of the season – stayed glued to each other as they sailed through heavy traffic.

Farnum would use a lapped car to pick off Gauffin on lap 41, but the Hancock, NH pilot reclaimed the point two laps later and led the three-car charge the final seven laps. Farnum was strong in second, with Delgenio filling his mirror to claim third.

This Saturday, July 30, New England’s fastest quarter-mile oval will return to action, as Bill Kimball, Russ Hersey and Nick Boivin lead the sizzling Sportsman Modifieds to battle. The Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Super Late Models, Young Guns, New England Champ Karts, and Lightning Stocks will also be in action. Post time at Monadnock Speedway is 6 p.m.
