AUGUST 15, 2011 ----- Johnston tops Monadnock Speedway's Super Stocks ----- Bill Johnston ended a ten-week drought Saturday, August 13, at Monadnock Speedway, rocketing to his first win of the summer in the Super Stock feature. The victory helped the defending champion – currently second in the points chase gain valuable ground on division leader John Lavoie, who came home fifth on the night after an early-race jingle with the wall.

Other winners at the high banked speedplant included Modified ace Kirk Alexander, who took his fourth victory lap of the season; Sportsman Modified points leader Bill Kimball, notching his fifth win of the summer to stay solidly atop the leader board; and hot shoe Barry Gray, who added to his long list of Super Late Model feature wins.

Rich Fournier, no stranger to victory lane at the fast quarter-mile oval, gobbled up the field to win the 50-lap New England Mini Stock Tour event, while Ian MacDonald scored his first career victory in the Young Guns feature.

Jonah Delgenio won his second race of the season, topping the Lightning Stock 50-lapper, and Barry Schonborg earned his third in the show-closing Thunder Stock event.

The Super Stock main was Johnston’s all the way. Starting on the front row, he quickly opened a huge lead before a lap-13 caution bunched the field and moved Kenny Springer to second, and side-by-side with Johnston.

Johnston was up to the challenge, though, and kept Springer in his mirror the rest of the way to score the win. Eddie Brehio III, in his second outing of the season, came from row five to claim third on lap 22. Jason Lefleur and John Lavoie – backpedaling early after bouncing of the frontchute wall on lap three – rounded out the top five.

Rich Fournier steered clear of a lap-six crash that claimed six cars from the 26-car Texas Roadhouse NE Mini Stock tour starting field, moved up from 12th to second on lap 10, and then waved goodbye to the rest of the field to win the 50-lapper going away.

Joey Kendall was strong in second, but had nothing for Fournier on this night, with Louis Mahar chasing Kendall to claim third. Mahar, Monadnock regular Beth Adams, and 15-year-old Young Guns alumnus Adam Manley topped the qualifying races, with Adams done for the night on lap six, and Manley’s ride badly bruised on the same lap.

In the Modified main, Russ Hersey had the field covered until Rusty Ball spun out of second on lap 23, bringing Kirk Alexander, Todd Patnode and Jim Boniface to his bumper for the ensuing restart.

Alexander would edge past Hersey to grab the point six laps later, and Patnode would then power past to claim second, but Hersey would yield no more, holding Boniface at bay to come home third. Ball recovered from his earlier spin to cross the stripe fifth, with popular veteran Roger Raymond, in only his first outing of the year, and second in several seasons, claiming sixth.

John Rowan grabbed the early lead in the Sportsman Modified feature, giving way to Kyle Poodiack on lap two. Bill Kimball was charging hard and up to second by lap three, looking high and low to find running room around Poodiack, his nephew. Using the bottom of the track, Kimball would power to the point, holding Russ Hersey at bay the final seven circuits around the high banks to score his fifth win. With Hersey earning his second trophy of the night in the runnerup slot, Poodiack – who cut his racing teeth in the Allison Legacy series – held strong in third. Tyler Jarvenpaa completed his strong night’s work in fourth, with Keith Carzello coming home fifth.

Mike Parks led the first eight laps of the Super Late Model main, then giving way to Barry Gray. Steve Gauthier snatched second on a lap-18 restart. With Gray grabbing the gold again, Gauthier and Parks would join him in trophy row.

The 15-lap Young Guns feature was caution free, with Ian MacDonald in charge all the way to score his first career win. Hillary Renaud was second, with JT Cloutier coming from row seven to claim the third-place hardware.

In the 50-lap Lightning Stock main, Jonah Delgenio came from row six to take the lead lap 45, and then outdistanced Gordon Farnum to win for the second time this summer. Matt Gauffin was strong in third, with Tim Jackson and Dick Houle rounding out the top five.

Barry Schonborg took the lead from Joe Ethier on lap 22 of the Thunder Stock feature and never looked back. Ed Lofland got up for second, with Ethier holding strong in third.

Monadnock Speedway will host another full card of racing this Saturday, August 20, with the NASCAR Tour Type Modifieds squaring off in their Final Twin 25 Triple Crown Series Event presented by Artioli Dodge. The visiting Pro-4 Modifieds will also be in action, along with the Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Young Guns, and Thunder Stocks. Post time at New England’s fastest quarter-mile is 6 p.m.
