SEPTEMBER 4, 2011 ..... Hanson and Johnson and Szczapa, Oh My, Talented Trio Takes Sunday Super Series Mini Sprint Wins ..... Three time and defending 500cc Granite State Mini Sprints Champ Lacey Hanson of Orwell, VT used a slide job to get by Steve Hutchinson and pick up the win in her first of 3 features in three different classes at the second round of the Open Cockpit Sunday Super Series at Legion Speedway. She followed up with a first in class/overall fourth run in the East Coast Mini Sprints feature for 750 and 1000cc cars and a seventh place finish with the Sprint Cars of New England. “I had a lot of fun and I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to race so many different kinds of cars,” Hanson said.
Joe Szczapa of Suffield, CT, a frequent competitor at both Accord Speedway and Glen Ridge Motorsports Park in New York picked up his first feature win of the season as the overall winner of the 750/1000cc event. “The track came around and I just had to pick where I needed to be and let it go,” Szczapa said succinctly.
In the 600cc event for both Granite State and North East Mini Sprint members, Lowbed Johnson of Arlington, MA used a daring first lap, first turn, bonsai move to jump from fifth to first in a wire to wire victory. “After the heat, I loaded it up with fuel, raised the wing up a little bit, lowered the back of the car half a turn, raised the front of the car half a turn and moved the right rear tire in half an inch... and the car was like glue. It’s amazing how sensitive these cars are to change,” Johnson explained.
The final round of the Super Sunday Series returns to Legion Speedway in Rumney, NH, next Sunday, September 11 with hot laps at 2:00 pm and the first green flag at 3:00. The Sprint Cars of New England will headline and be accompanied by the Granite State Mini Sprints, the North East Mini Sprints and the East Coast Mini Sprints.
