SEPTEMBER 5, 2011 ----- Modified Crown to Alexander at Monadnock ----- Nobody worked harder than Kirk Alexander Saturday at Monadnock Speedway, winning his second consecutive Tour Type Modified crown in true championship style, as he went all-out in his bid for a victory he didn’t even need.

But, while Alexander had plenty to celebrate at the end of the night’s action on the high banked quarter-mile, the happiest person in the ballpark was probably Samantha Macomber, who scored her first career victory in the first of two Young Guns events.

Other winners on the night included Joe Boivin in the Mini Stocks, and Joe Ethier in the Thunder Stocks, each notching his first win of the season; John Lavoie, whose sixth Super Stock victory of the summer made him nearly uncatchable in his division’s championship chase; and Todd Patnode, who won his fourth Modified main event of the season.

Hillary Renaud topped her fourth Young Guns feature of the season; and Gordon Farnum took over the Lighting Stock points battle with his third win of the summer, edging ahead of Hard Luck Dick Houle, the first man out in the night’s 50-lapper. In the visiting Classic Lites feature, it was Rusty Bryant earning his first Monadnock victory lap.

Rookie Nick Boivin led the first 20 laps of the Modified main event, then giving way to hot shoe Jim Boniface as the race went back under green after a three-car jingle on the frontstretch. Alexander, though, who needed only a fourth-place finish to clinch the championship, wasn’t looking for the easy way out.

Third when the action was slowed, he took only one more lap to pass Patnode for second, then setting his sights squarely on the leading Boniface. Ducking under the point man along the backchute on lap 28, Alexander took control the next time around.

But his Alexander’s Sheet Metal/Applebee’s rocket grew noticeably loose through the turns as the race progressed, and Patnode, who had claimed the deuce spot from Boniface, turned up the afterburners. Reeling Alexander in on lap 39, Patnode went hunting from the top of the track, making his efforts stick two laps later.

Boniface would use the same plan to reclaim second on lap 45, and with the champion holding on for third, Frank Letoile and Robbie Goodenough completed the top five.

In the Super Stock main, Josh King took immediate control and held Lavoie in his shadow for 20 laps. Lavoie, a model of patience on this night, finally was rewarded for his persistence on the 21st circuit, taking the point from the top of track and then speeding away to his sixth win.

King, himself on a rail all night, was strong in second, with Jason Lefleur coming home third, his second trophy run in as many weeks. Dave Striebel and Bill Johnston completed the top five, with Johnston losing precious ground to Lavoie in his bid for back-to-back crowns. In a post race inspection, Josh King was disqualified for rules infractions giving Striebel third.

Mini Stock rookie Joe Boivin grabbed the lead at the drop of the green from his front row starting position and never looked back. Kimmy Rivet and points leader Eric Dejackome took turns leaning on Boivin, with Rivet settling for a strong runner-up finish, just ahead of Dejackome, whose third-place outing gave him a commanding lead in the championship chase.

Steady Chris Davis got up for fourth, edging out Julia Raymond, but losing valuable ground to Dejackome in his quest to repeat last summer’s championship.

The Young Guns ran two ten-lap events, with Samantha Macomber leading all the way in the opening round to notch her first career victory. Hometown pilot Ethan Marsh finished at her bumper to claim second, with Allison Coehlo earning her first-ever trophy in third.

In the youth division nightcap, it was Hillary Renaud leading early and often to tally her fourth win of the 2011 campaign. Cordell Colon was strong and steady to come home second, with JT Cloutier recovering from an early-race spin to claim third on the last lap.

Dick Houle entered the night’s event atop the Lightning Stock points parade but saw that honor quickly dashed when his ride coasted to a stop atop turn four. Pat Houle, taking full advantage of his older brother’s woes, had the hot hand early; lapping cars by lap nine as he set a torrid pace.

Gordon Farnum, though, smelling the sweet aroma of the points lead with Dick Houle in the pits, reeled in the fading Pat Houle on lap 35, making the pass stick four laps later, and then pulled away.
Two-time winner Matt Gauffin got up for second, with Pat Houle fighting his ill-handling ride all the way to third. Bruce Clark and Tim Paquette rounded out the top five in the fast-paced event.

Joe Ethier had scored a boatload of seconds and thirds in the Thunder Stock division this summer, but victory lane had eluded him until Saturday. Quickly opening up a big lead, Ethier held of Ed Lofland to earn his first win. Barry Schonborg, steady all night, came home third.

This Saturday, September 10, the speedway will host EMS and Firefighter Appreciation Weekend featuring the Sportsman Modifieds leading a five-division card of racing at New England ’s fastest quarter-mile oval. The Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Young Guns, and Lightning Stocks will also be in action, with racing beginning at 6 p.m. On Sunday, September 11, the speedway will hold the MudBog MudSlinger Series at 11am.
