SEPTEMBER 7, 2011 ..... Open Cockpit Sunday Super Series Wraps Up at Legion This Weekend; SCoNE Points Championship Battle Tight as a Crab’s Touchas .....  If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride; if victories were points then the race would be tied.

Defending Sprint Cars of New England Champ Chris Donnelly and last year’s runner-up Dan Douville each has four feature wins so far this season, but they aren’t tied for the points championship.  One of Douville’s wins was in a Triple Crown Series race, which did not award championship points and both drivers have had varying performances in the feature races they didn’t win and in the heat races, which also award points.

This Sunday’s final event in the Open Cockpit Sunday Super Series at Legion Speedway will be crucial in determining the championship.  Coupled with the season ender at Bear Ridge Speedway on Saturday September 24, there will be 130 points available, if a driver can win his heat and the feature on both nights.   Donnelly has 505 points, but both Douville with 499 and Kevin Chaffee with 423 are within the magic number of 130.  It’s a three way battle that is likely go on through the last lap of the last race of the season.

Chaffee, “The Fairlee Flier,” may be the hungriest, because he hasn’t had a Sprint Car win  this season to go with his Sportsman Modified win and his pair of USAC DMA Midget victories.

If their efforts to date foreshadow the future, Donnelly will fly below the radar, turning in a low key performance until he effortlessly emerges, seemingly from nowhere, to contend for the lead.  Douville will chart a more dramatic course, looking for grip so high up on the racetrack that the top of his wing may trigger the approach control radar at the Lebanon Municipal Airport.  Flutist and percussionist, painter and sculptor, poet and novelist, restrained and unleashed; each stands a dead even chance of wearing the crown.

At Legion Speedway this Sunday, the Sprint Cars will share the bill with the Granite State Mini Sprints, the North East Mini Sprints and the East Coast Mini Sprints.  Hot laps are at 2:00 pm and the first green flag is scheduled for 3:00.  Located at the Rumney/Wentworth town line on NH Route 25, Legion Speedway is equidistant from just about everywhere.
