SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 ----- Gray completes perfect season; Kimball, others clinch at Monadnock ----- Dave Striebel and Cordell Colon each earned his first career victory lap Saturday, September 10, at Monadnock Speedway, while veteran pilot Barry Gray was crowned champion of the Super Late Models, capping his undefeated season at the high banked quarter-mile.
Bill Kimball used a third-place finish to unofficially clinch his second Sportsman Modified title in as many seasons, and both John Lavoie and Eric Dejackome unofficially locked up their respective championships, each his first at the Winchester speedplant.
Gordon Farnum also unofficially sewed up his first career title, topping the Lightning Stock division in his second season. In the Allison Legacy feature, Peter Portante picked up a well-earned win, while Carter Levereaux lapped the field en route to victory in the New England Champ Kart event.
Russ Hersey shook free of the jinx that haunted him all season in the Sportsman Modified division, leading both early and late to notch his first win of the summer in the limited Modified division.
Hersey bolted to the lead at the drop of the green, but faltered momentarily on a lap-six restart, with Kyle Poodiack rocketing to the point to pace the field until Hersey ducked under him to reclaim the top spot on lap 18.
With Poodiack putting together his best run of the summer to claim the runner-up hardware, it was Uncle Billy, Poodiack’s uncle Bill Kimball, taking advantage of his third-place run to unofficially clinch the 2011 crown. Nick Boivin was fourth on the night, just inches behind Kimball, with Keith Carzello finishing his solid run in fifth.
The Super Late Model feature ended like the four that had preceded it this summer; with Barry Gray basking in victory lane. Mike Parks took the opening lead and held the top spot for a dozen laps, with Gray taking over on the 13th circuit, and Steve Gauthier powering into second. With Gray scoring his fifth win in as many outings, Gauthier copped runner-up honors ahead of Matt Zenisky, Parks, and Fran Colson Jr.
Dave Striebel led all the way en route to his first-ever victory in the Super Stock feature, but the win didn’t come easily. Striebel had Jason Lafleur and Bill Johnston virtually glued to his bumper most of the way, with Lafleur getting several strong looks under him but unable to complete the pass. John Lavoie got up for third on lap 18, was quickly shuffled backward, and then worked his way into the spot again four laps later. From there, he and Johnston waged a furious side-by-side battle for the deuce spot, with Lavoie winning out on the last lap.
Johnston, the 2010 track champion, came home third, inches behind Lavoie, with Lafleur and Ed Lofland rounding out the top five. Lavoie, a six-time winner this season at Monadnock, used his runner-up outing to unofficially clinch the 2011 crown entering the speedway’s final event of the season.
Joe Rogers led the first 17 laps of the Mini Stock main, quickly opening a big lead as the pack diced for running room behind him. Julia Raymond, from row four, picked up two spots to claim second with a daring low-groove pass on lap nine, finally reeling Rogers in on lap 18.
A lap-21 caution bunched the field; with Rogers holding the point, as Rich Fournier rocketed into second when Raymond bobbled momentarily. Three laps later, it was Fournier inching ahead of Rogers and then darting off to the win. With Rogers strong in second, Kim Rivet got up for third, Eric Dejackome was fourth, and Raymond, the feature-winning rookie, was fifth on the night.
Allison Coelho led laps one and two of the Young Guns feature, with Cordell Colon, from row two, then taking charge and speeding off to his first career win on the high banks of Monadnock. JT Cloutier recovered quickly from a lap-one spin to move through the 13-car field and claim third on lap six, then second on lap seven, but had to settle for the runner-up hardware on this night. Ryan Shaw, steady all race, came home third, with Coelho and Hillary Renaud rounding out the top five.
Pat Houle led all the way in the Lightning Stock 50-lapper, with his older brother Dick working his way quickly to second to chase his sibling the rest of the way in hope of reclaiming the points lead he’d lost to mechanical woes a week earlier.
Dick Houle’s hopes would be futile, though, as Gordon Farnum cruised into third and followed the Houle brothers under the checkers to unofficially clinch his first-ever track title. Tim Paquette was fourth on the night.
Monadnock Speedway will conclude its 2011 racing season this Saturday, September 17, with the popular annual Super Saturday event. The Sportsman Modifieds will square off in a 50-lap main event, with the Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Young Guns, Lightning Stocks, and Thunder Stocks also in action.
The Pro-4 Modifieds, Allison Legacy Series, and New England Truck Series will all join the speedway’s regular NASCAR divisions, and there will be spectator racing, Big Wheel racing, and the track champions will square off in the Great School Bus Race. Post time for this special event is 2 p.m.
