SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 ..... SCoNE Championship Still Up For Grabs ..... Between them, Dan Douville and Chris Donnelly have already earned 21 Track and Series Championships. They’ll meet on the oval shaped field of dreams this Saturday at Bear Ridge Speedway to determine which of them will be the 2011 Sprint Cars of New England Champion.
Only 17 points separate Douville (544) and Donnelly (527) and with 65 points up for grabs, either one could leave as the Champion. The pair have swapped the points lead all season and each has four feature victories, though one of Douville’s was in a Triple Crown Series race that did not award Championship points.
The two have been competitors for decades and each knows the other’s strengths and weaknesses, so it promises to be an intense event. Under the SCoNE system, points are awarded for heats as well as features and the points leaders are handicapped to the rear of the field, ensuring a plethora of passing and a flat out frenzy of rugged racing.
There’s no shortage of drivers waiting to play the spoiler. Clay Dow has won three of the last four features and aims to keep his streak red hot. “The Fairlee Flier” Kevin Chaffee is mathematically out of contention for the championship, but solidly in the hunt for the runner-up spot. Jim Lowrey, Jr. already has championships with the NEMA Midgets and in a Supermodified at Star Speedway and he’ll be looking to pick up his second win in his rookie year in a SCoNE Sprint Car.
The SCoNE Sprint Cars finale is a part of the Second Annual New England Dirt Track Championship, sponsored by The Home Depot, Lake Sunapee Bank, Miller Auto Group, and Gary’s Tire & Auto of Claremont, NH. Also highlighting the night is a 100 lap, $1,000 to win DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature which is expected to draw more than 30 cars. Noise-R-Us will bring down the season with a giant fireworks display.
The starting time has been moved to 5:00-ish pm to accommodate all the action. Race fans should plan to arrive early, because Douville and Donnelly will have their cars parked at the main entrance and will be autographing a special championship souvenir points sheet.
Regular weekly prices have not been raised for this special show, so general admission is just $10.00 for adults (age 17-61), $8.00 for teens (12-16) and seniors (62+), and $2.00 for kids.
Bear Ridge Speedway is an alcohol-free family entertainment facility located on Kidder Road in Bradford, VT. Bear Ridge Speedway is Vermont’s only dirt track and is the only track in New England sanctioned by the Charlotte, NC-based DIRTcar organization.
