(9/3-9/5) ..... Kraze Korlacki Speed Equipment, Inc. and Seekonk Speedway, jointly announce an early entry for” Racing Against Breast Cancer” on October 2nd, at the famous 1/3 mile Bay State oval. 2008 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion, Johnny Benson Jr, will join the cars and stars of ISMA in a 100 lap Super Modified Race. Johnny will be piloting the # 74 Brad Lichty of Ayr Ontario, Canada owned, Patco Transportation, sponsored Super Modified. “I have never seen Seekonk Speedway, but I am aware of its rich racing history. Many of the ISMA teams tell me it is one of their favorite tracks. I am exited about competing at the famed “Cement Palace”, which should be a lot of fun while supporting a great cause in the fight against Breast Cancer”, said Benson from his race shop in Charlotte, North Carolina. Labor Day weekend brings ISMA to the Oswego Speedway in Oswego, New York to compete in the 17th Bud Light ISMA Super National 50, as part of the 2010 International Classic Weekend. This event is the 3rd of three pre-qualifier races for the “Racing Against Breast Cancer” Race, with the winner receiving a guaranteed starting position. Chris Perley #11, and Joey Scanlon #88, are guaranteed starters as a result of the races at Lee USA Speedway, and the Waterford Speedbowl.
Waterford Speedbowl crowned another champion of its Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday program and saw two championship battles tighten up headed into the final week of competition next Wednesday. Anthony Flannery of East Hampton merely had to start the Legends Cars race to cinch up the division championship but won it in style by executing a thrilling final corner pass to win the event. Hometown driver Al Potter scored a popular win in the Super X-Cars, his first of the year. Patrick Williams of Middletown took the X-Car race. The championship battle tightened in the Super X-Car and X-Car divisions after the night’s racing was complete. Nicholas Sowa of Middletown won his fourth Bandolero race of the year and third in four weeks. Taylor-Marie Moran of Preston and Kim Parker of Niantic split the two Women on Wheels races.
The Thompson International Speedway played host to the Modified Racing Series for the second time in 2010. In the end it was “one of their” own standing in victory lane with Rowan Pennink of Huntington Valley, PA, scoring his third Modified Racing Series victory. In NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action, Ted Christopher of Plainville, CT, earned his ninth Sunoco Modified feature event of the season. Mike O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA, bested a strong field to post the victory in the Super Late Models.
Stafford Speedway was back in action with a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program on Friday night, August 27th. Ted Christopher scored his first victory of the 2010 season in the 40-lap SK Modified feature, Woody Pitkat took advantage of a green white checkered restart to nail down his sixth victory of 2010 in the 30-lap Late Model feature, Tommy Barrett, Jr. scored his eighth win of 2010 in the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Dave Yardley won his second feature of 2010 in the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, and Cory Casagrande matched his brother Kyle as a three-time winner in the 15-lap DARE Stock feature.
Following a pair of races at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds, Ken Coolbeth of Morris, CT recorded a third and a sixth place in the two AMA Grand National events. Coolbeth is sponsored by Bettencourt Honda/Suzuki in W. Bridgewater.
We've heard the the NHMS in Loudon, NH is negotiating with a group of principals about a New England Racing Hall of Fame on the grounds of the Speedway Motorsports Inc. track. This idea was approached before when former owner Bob Bahre was in control of that venue. But, nothing real came of the idea. The SMI crowd seem to be much more interested in this idea and it's at the point where there designs and renderings are being considered.
A "New Breed of Speed" stormed into New Hampshire Motor Speedway Tuesday, August 31, when two of the top teams from the IZOD IndyCar Series completed the first official testing laps in preparation for next year's return of IndyCar racing to New England. The teams, with drivers Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon, are participating in a two-day Firestone Tire Tests. The test wraps up Wednesday. In just a little less than a year, the IZOD IndyCar Series will race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on August 14, 2011.
"The track is very suitable for these cars," said 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner Scott Dixon, driver of the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, during a break in testing. "I think we are already averaging over 160 mph. The racing here is going to be unbelievable." Sharing the testing responsibilities with Dixon is 2004 IZOD IndyCar Series Champion, Tony Kanaan, driver of the No. 11 Team 7-Eleven car. While he is looking forward to next year's race, Kanaan knows how important his role is during the two-day Firestone Test. "For now, we have a big responsibility to get a good package for next year," said Kanaan during the first day's lunch break. Tuesday's Firestone Tire Test session was open free-of-charge to fans. Wednesday's testing will be closed to the public.
IZOD Indy Car Series Technical Director Kevin Blanch is one of the many people in the Indy Car community who is excited to return to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Blanch's enthusiasm for the event cannot only be attributed to the great racing he expects to see, but also to experience the natural beauty that New Hampshire has to offer. When he was last at NHMS in 1998, Blanch was the crew chief for Panther Racing and driver Scott Goodyear. Blanch was telling Lake Winnipesaukee fishing stories on pit road during a break in testing.
"I rented boats each night for the crew, and there were guys catching big smallmouth (bass) who had never fished before. Each night, we'd lose count how many we were catching." Firestone tire engineers brought more than 400 tires for the two-day test. More than 20 different combinations of compounds will be tested. The first set of tires Kanaan and Dixon used was the same compound used at the 2009 race on the one-mile oval in Milwaukee.
"We came here with the Milwaukee (aero) numbers and out of the box we were very close," said IZOD Indy Car Series technical director Kevin Blanch. "In qualifying, with the package we have now, the drivers can probably get flat (around the 1-mile oval) if the car is really good. In the race, there will be no way you're going to get flat. They'll have to constantly work the throttle, which is what you want. We're also learning here, with the progressive banking, that if the car isn't quite right, they (the drivers) can just change to the next lane and that helps the car. The track is going to lend itself to really good racing when we get the numbers right on the down force."
Both Dixon and Kanaan confirmed this Firestone Test was the first trip to "The Magic Mile" for each. "It's kind of refreshing to come to a place that you have never been before," Dixon said. "It's nice to branch out to new places and the (fan) following for racing is already tremendous as you can see by the Cup races they have here."
For Kanaan, his first trip to NHMS was not without its detours. "This morning I got here late because I realized I didn't know how to get here," said Kanaan. "I am not good at directions, so I had to ask at the hotel. I had to stop at the gas station to ask for directions too!"
The next major event scheduled for NHMS is the SYLVANIA 300, September 16-19.
With the Modified Racing Series making its debut appearance at Stafford Motor Speedway on Friday, Sept. 10, it is in the midst of its most competitive season with 10 different winners in 12 races and a tight points race. There was a palpable buzz in the air when the Stafford race was announced back in December and the buzz has picked up steam as the race approaches with such an exciting points race and the number of different feature winners.
As the summer season begins to give way to the autumn season, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season at Stafford Motor Speedway heads into its final month of Friday night NASCAR racing before the season ending CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend. The CARQUEST Fall Final Weekend is scheduled for Oct. 1st through Oct. 3rd and the “September Series”, Stafford’s three Friday night events in September, give competitors one final chance to position themselves either into championship contention, or to move up a spot or two in the points standings before the 2010 season comes to an end.
Waterford Speedbowl returned to action on Saturday with another round of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing on Night of Electricity, presented by Electrical Contractors Incorporated. Tyler Chadwick of Ledyard won his second consecutive SK Modified race and third on the season. Groton’s Bruce Thomas Jr. and Lisbon’s Ken Cassidy Jr. won their third races of the year in the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model and Norwich Bulletin Mini Stock divisions. Al Stone of New Haven rounded out the winners by taking his third consecutive Street Stock win, his fifth overall on the year.
Flyin’ Fred Astle was living like his nickname, Saturday night at Seekonk Speedway. The Pro Stock multi- champ from Westport stormed his way to the front of the Phil’s Propane 75-lap race by lap 10 and refused to relinquish the top spot all the way to the checkered flag. It was a new jewel in Astle’s crown, as he had not yet won a 75-lap race at the Cement Palace. The win also granted him breathing room over his nemesis this season, David Darling of Rehoboth. The duo entered the evening just one point apart in the standings and had see-sawed the lead over the past few weeks. Astle held two victories while his antagonist had nabbed three. Darling’s eleventh place finish, exacerbated by losing a tire on-track due to body metal rubbing the right front, will allow Astle some breathing room with three races remaining, but not much.
E for Effort honors on the evening go to Berkley, MA hot shoe Jake Vanada who came up to seriously hound Astle throughout the latter stages of the event. Vanada, who has seen a win on the year, has suffered a yin-yang series of fortunes with mechanical problems on his Pro Stock. It was running like a clock on the evening and Vanada was taking full advantage of his fortune. Rob Murphy nabbed third, which should ease him ahead of Mike Brightman in the standings. Brightman managed sixth and will see Murphy overcome the one point lead, causing them to exchange places in the standings. Ken Spencer and Tom Scully, Jr. nailed down fourth and fifth, and the points
Tyler Thompson led 29.75 laps of the scheduled 30. It was that last quarter-lap that spelled all the difference to Middleboro hot shoe, Randy Burr. Thompson, of Somerset, had battled with Dennis Stange throughout the race and held his position until the final turn of the last lap. Burr had started fifth, but elevated himself to third on the second lap. There he remained as Thompson and Stange fought a withering engagement throughout the race.
In the heat of battle through turns three and four of the ending circuit, Thompson and Stange swung up out of the groove – just enough to give the wily Burr the opportunity he’d been waiting for. He pounced full throttle coming through turn four, creating a 3-wide situation and punching his nose to the front of the pack. Thompson, surprised in his effort to win his first career race, hesitated a second and fell back as Stange poured on the coals, to no avail. Burr roared ahead for the checkered flag, a quarter of a second ahead of Stange. Divisional leader Ryan Vanasse also seized the moment and surged past Thompson for third. Thompson finished a quarter second behind Vanasse in fourth with Colbey Fournier of Berkley rounding out the top 5. “The 66 and 22 were running hard and they gave me a little crack . . . and that’s all that I needed,” said Burr in post-race comments.
Once the traffic was sorted and the early red flag situation was cleared, Lenny Guy put his Sport Truck into the lead on lap two and did not relinquish his hold on first place in a race that ran green flag for 24 of 25 laps. Seekonk’s Mike Cavallaro jumped into second and spent 20 laps doing everything he could to make life miserable for the leader, but could not, in the end, make the pass into first. In addition to his trophy and checkered flag lap, he was issued a big hug by his wife. “You won and you got a huge hug,” noted track announcer Kevin Boucher. What do you think of that? “I got lucky,” beamed Guy.
On the first restart, Dane Saritelli looped it coming off turn 2, and divisional leader Rick Martin, trying to avoid, went hard against the backstretch wall, throwing a tire from the right rear, which sailed high into the air before bouncing into the infield. Roderick got into Saritelli hard and Dumas spun around the wreck, ending up sliding to the infield in turn three. Martin limped his truck from the backstretch to turn three before he realized his tire was down. It took a long time to separate Roderick from Saritelli, and Roderick’s truck came away with no fenders, hood or front bumper. The crash ended the evening for Martin, Saritelli and Roderick. Ed Gannon went to the rear for the assist on the spin.
Tiverton driver Scott Bruneau found himself in a pursuit position for most of the Street Stock feature before finding himself in the lead when Chris DeMoura’s car broke down on the 23rd of 25 laps. DeMoura, of North Dighton, had started in the fourth row behind polesitter Ken Kohler and began to wend his way toward the front as numerous cautions slowed the field and eliminated competitors. Thirteen of 24 starters eventually finished the race. In the championship challenge, where Scott Serydynski had led Ryan Lineham by a single point, fate was not kind to the former, as Serydynski, of West Greenwich, lost a wheel during one of the on track incidents and was forced to retire with a DNF just 13 laps in. He finished in23rd, while Lineham, from Coventry, RI, picked up after early race incidents and finished a solid 6th.
A late single file restart put DeMoura ahead of Bruneau, Tony Oliveira, Travis and Axon. DeMoura went to the lead once more, while Oliveira went high and wide, then slid back to fifth. On lap 23, DeMoura’s car suddenly broke down on the frontstretch, but he limped it off turn two into the infield to allow the race to continue, and Bruneau suddenly found himself with the lead, a lap-and-a-half from the finish. He outpaced Travis through the white flag lap and across the line with a 1/3-second lead. Axon, of Attleboro, followed for third, Beaulieu fourth, Tivertonian Rob Murray fifth, Lineham holding down sixth, Cumberland, Rhode Islander Mike Mitchell seventh, Bamford returning to come in eighth, Ray Negley ninth and Rey Lovelace rounding out the top 10.
NOCELLA CLAIMS BOSTON LOUIE SEYMOUR NEMA LITES CROWN
Jeff Abold became the first back-to-back Boston Louie Memorial winner Saturday night, dominating the 14th running of the Northeastern Midget Association’s headliner at Seekonk Speedway.
Coming from the 14th starting spot after setting fast time (11.071), Abold (Seymour 4) needed only 10 laps to take the lead from Anthony Marvuglio. Only a late restart and brief challenge from point leader Randy Cabral slowed the run.
It was a complete sweep for the sponsoring Seymour family, Anthony Nocella (Seymour 29) coming from ninth to win the NEMA Lites feature. Nocella also withstood a late restart threat before besting Andy Barrows (Barrows 81) and Randy Cabral (Scally 4).
Both features went 29 laps honoring the memory of Boston Louie Seymour.
Russ Stoehr (Dumo’s Desire 45), Chris deRitis (Cicconi/deRitis 75) and Aaron Wall (Wall 55) completed the top five behind Abold and Cabral.
“I didn’t expect to get to the front that quickly,” said Abold. He took third from Cabral on lap six, second from deRitis on eight and first from Marvuglio, the only other leader on 10. “I saw those guys in front of me and I knew I had a good car,” he said.
Abold, 21, easily thwarted a lap 19 restart challenge from deRitis before the Cabral single-file restart threat with 26 gone. “I was a little concerned but I knew how I had to drive it,” said Abold.
Cabral made it interesting but Abold quickly established a seven car length advantage. It was a strong run for Cabral, who started 11th, had third by lap six and grabbed second from deRitis on lap 21.
Stoehr, who continues to run second in points, passed deRitis on the final restart. DeRitis, Jim Miller and Anthony Marvuglio were the heat winners.
Nocella survived three cautions before taking the lead from Lanson Fornoro down the backstretch on lap seven. “Once I got in front and could run my own line it felt great,” said the 17-year old. He had a half-track lead when the last yellow fell.
“I was a little nervous about the final restart,” said Nocella. “I mean I was leading the thing.” Barrows, second since lap 14, was more concerned. “I was content with second at that point,” he said. “Now I had Randy Cabral to contend with.”
Eddie LeClerc Jr. (LeClerc 14) and Russ Wood Jr. (Wood 51) were fourth and fifth. Fornoro, who grabbed the pole after a second lap crash eliminated the front row, was the only other leader. He wound up seventh. Jim Santamaria and Jesse State captured Lites heats.
NEMA NUGGETS: Abold was “absolutely” thrilled at being the first to win two straight “Louie” races. It was also his second straight fast time, besting last year by four tenths…It was the largest field in the history of the race…Great runs by Anthony Marvuglio in the feature and Lanson Fornoro in the Lites race were noteworthy

The Labor Day weekend begins this Thursday when the Tour-Type Modifieds return for the third of four appearances this season at the Thompson International Speedway. These popular events attract many of the top Modified drivers in the northeast for the 40-lap shoot out that pays $2500.00 to win.
The Tour-Type Modifieds had four races scheduled at Thompson this season. Two very competitive events have captured the race fans with the high speed, wheel-to-wheel racing action. Ronnie Silk, a driver who has realized considerable success at Thompson in the past couple of years, won the first 40-lap shoot out. He was followed across the finish line by Ted Christopher, Louie Mechalides , Steven Reed and Keith Rocco.
When the Tour-Type Modifieds returned for round two, it was seven time NASCAR Modified Tour champion, Mike Stefanik who claimed the win. Silk tried to make it two in a row, but Stefanik was just too strong for Silk to overcome. Silk had to settle for second with Reed, Mechalides and Tom Bolles crossing the finish line behind him.
With $2,500 on the line for the winner, a good field of Tour-Type Modifieds is expected to be on hand for the 40-lap when the green flag is waved on Thursday. It’s a great opportunity for fans to see many of the very best Modified race car drivers once again at Thompson before the October running of the World Series of Speedway Racing.
Thompson’s Thursday night race schedule is nearing an end and the battle for valuable track and NASCAR points will be fierce in the closing weeks of the 2010 race schedule. Points races are scheduled for September 2nd, 9th, 16th and Sunday the 26th. The Sunday event is makeup date for the Tour-Type Modified race that was rained out on August 5th. Race teams feel the pressures of competition with division championships on the line. Fans can expect each race team to bring their “A Game” to the track in an attempt to capture a coveted Thompson title.
With only five races remaining on the 2010 schedule, the Modified Racing Series, sponsored by Bob Valenti AutoMall.com, returns to the Waterford, CT., Speedbowl Saturday night, September 4, with one of the hottest battles for the series championship in the seven year existence of the tour. Engine issues for the point leader, an off night for the series defending champion, a dedicated car-owner and hard working pit crew, a well deserved win fought by one of the series young stars, last week at Thompson, CT., has created a log jam at the top of the standings.
Dwight Jarvis, Ascutney, VT., suffered engine problems during practice at Thompson forcing the point leader and former series champion out of the event. Jon McKennedy, East Chelmsford, MA., second in the standings, was off the mark and involved in a late race incident resulting in a 24th place finish, leaving him in a first place tie with Les Hinckley, Windsor Locks, CT.
Hinckley entered the program 39 points behind Jarvis, but thanks to the hard work and commitment by his car owner Chuck Montville and crew, Hinckley was race ready after a hard practice session crash. In the feature race, Hinckley quietly made his way to a top five finish after starting deep in the field, and ended up in a tie with McKennedy at the top of the standings.
The drama does not stop there. Rowan Pennink, Huntingtdon Valley, PA., is now only 33 points out of first place, thanks to his win at Thompson; his second series win in 2010.
“Thunder on the Sound” will feature 100 laps of green flag racing for the MRS. In addition to the top point men, additional entries expected include Doug Coby, Milford, CT., Keith Rocco, Wallingford, CT., Steven Masse, Bellingham, MA., 2008 champion, Chris Pasteryak, Lisbon, CT., Kenny Barry, Preston, CT., Todd Annarummo, Swansea, MA., rookie drivers, Joey Jarvis, Ascutney, Geoff Gernhard, Salem, CT., Jack Bateman, Canaan, NH., and Jeff Malave, Manchester, CT. The holiday weekend special begins at 4:45 PM. Additional information at
Matt Kobyluck posted a top-five finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut at Gresham Motorsports Park this past weekend, and catapulted the Mohegan Sun Casino race team into sixth place in the points with only two races remaining in the season. Kobyluck began the weekend with a wrecked car after a flat tire sent him into the turn three wall during practice and forced the team to go to a backup car. "This finish feels like a win," admitted Kobyluck. "Considering the circumstances, yeah, I'm happy. We destroyed our primary car in the last five minutes of practice, pulled out our backup car and started dead last only to finish fifth - I can't find much complaining in that."
The Spindles Car Club will have their annual car show at the Marshfield Fairgrounds on Labor Day Monday starting a 9 a.m. This is one of the biggest shows around and it's been going on for three decades.
According to reports in the Boston Globe New England Dragway in Epping, NH will join NHRA, the premier drag racing sanctioning body, in 2011. There's also discussion and consideration of bringing in a NHRA National event which includes the biggest names in AA Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stocks. Due to the required $6-$7 million improvements needed at NED, not to mention an estimated five-year time line to do all of the work, it could be a while before New England Dragway announces a NHRA National date.
